This is an enormously useful book and one that addresses a challenge that many organizations are currently struggling with: how do you DO strategy? There is already plenty written on and around strategy, but there remains little out there that can act as a practical guide to thinking through and constructing strategy. Dr. Layton first builds a foundation, discussing theory and the forms strategies have taken. From there he presents a practical development process to help guide and focus the efforts of strategy development teams.

Given the oft cited pressure of increased uncertainty and a seemingly more dynamic context, this book could not have come at a better time for those tasked with designing paths to future advantage. I lead strategic design working groups at a military academic institution and we’ll be leveraging Dr. Layton’s ideas in our future projects.

This is an area I know a little about and will be practicing in for an upcoming project. The topic is one that nearly everyone acknowledges, but no one seems to understand. We still have a way to go to get this formally modellable, but what a great resource! This is not only the best book on the topic, but likely the only one you will ever need. I believe this will be of interest to non-specialists interested in history, the military and how each has shaped the other.

One of the best books, if not the best, on the subject, from an analytical perspective.

Every practitioner or student of grand strategy, must have a copy of Dr. Layton’s Grand Strategy in his or her library. This text not only discusses what grand strategy entails but also provides case studies as evidence of these theories. This book highlights Dr. Layton’s expertise on the subject while effectively communicating to the reader how to both understand and apply these principles in analyzing and formulating grand strategy.

A must read for students of grand strategy. Rare to find a book taking such a big topic while maintaining the ability to present the concepts so clearly and providing concrete examples - well done!
